Mrs. Publiski's Homework Guidelines
Philosophy
Research has been unable to prove that homework is imperative to student success, especially in the early grades. Therefore, I will not be sending homework home with your child on a daily or weekly basis. I do, however, ask that, as much as possible, you eat dinner as a family, play outside, get your child to bed early, and read each night; all of which have proven to correlate with student achievement. Any work that your child does not finish in class will be sent home for completion.
Backpack Books
Backpack books will be sent home weekly to ensure that your child has reading material for their 20 minutes of nightly reading. Backpack books are books that are selected by the student in a range near his or her independent reading level. These books are intended to be a resource; feel free to read books from your home library, visit your local library, or use reading apps such as Epic. Every child has unique interests and his or her reading material should be motivating to him or her.
Word Lists
At the start of the school year, your child will bring home a word list. This is a portion of the second-grade sight words that students are expected to know by the end of second grade. These words should be practiced frequently until your child can read them fluently. He or she does NOT need to spell these words. As each list is mastered your child will bring home a new list. These lists are also kept at school for practice.
Rocket Math
This year we will begin Rocket Math; a program designed to improve the students’ math fact automaticity. More information will come when we begin, but this is also something your child can practice at home.
